Newsletter - August 2006

Dear members of the Yellow Bike Community,

This is the first of the newsletters that we will be mailing out after each collective meeting.  At collective meetings we set new shop hours for the coming month, discuss upcoming projects, work parties and events.  We thought that it would be a good idea to keep the yellow bike community up to date on what we are thinking about after the meetings.  The collective meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month.

As always, all this is made possible by volunteer work, as we have no paid employees.  Shop hours and the projects that we are able to accomplish are greatly affected by the number of volunteers that we have.  If you are interested in volunteering or would like to know more about it talk to one of our shop coordinators or send us an austinyellowbike@gmail.com.  Donations are also greatly appreciated.  Bike donations can be dropped off at either of our shops during open hours.  If you would like to make a monetary donation we are now accepting them through our website via PayPal.

So enjoy this first installment and thanks again for your support, participation, and interest in our project.

-The Yellow Bike Project

PROPOSED HELMET LAW - There is a proposed helmet law that all in the Austin bike community should be aware of.  It would require that Bikers of ALL Ages would be required to wear a helmet by law.  There are groups in Austin working on both sides of this issue.  We encourage you to read the proposed law and voice your opinion to the city council.  For the Law: view former mayor Bruce Todd's full press release (this seems to be the only online effort that supports the helmet law).  Against the Law: League of Bicycling Voters (you can contact City Council or sign an online petition through this site), Bicycleaustin.info, Community Wiki on the Proposed Law.  There will be a City Council meeting on Thursday August 24th at 10AM.  All are encouraged to attend to voice their own personal opinions.

YELLOW BIKE HELMET LAW ACTIONS - In the 51st street shop we will have a set of petitions FOR and AGAINST the proposed law near the sign-up sheet.  We will take the set of petitions to the City Council meeting on August 24th that voice the opinions of the users of our shop.  While many volunteers within our organization have strong opinions on the subject, we as an organization are not taking a position on this issue.  We decided rather to inform our shop patrons of the law, voice their opinions through a set of petitions, and encourage them to become active in the city council hearings.

NEW HOURS - This summer we have been able to keep both of the shops open as many as 5 nights per week on account of strong volunteer support.  This is the first summer that we have not had to cut back hours severely.  Several of our coordinators have jumped town to beat the heat and get on a bicycle for a few months.  While it is great that several new volunteers showed up to the collective meeting for the fist time and want to get involved, we are having to cut the Wheatsville hours back a little to keep those of us that are not on vacation sane.  We were able to keep the 51st street shop open 5 nights a week so come on up and use it.  Shops have been busier than ever with the shop users frequently taking over every work stand and most open floor space.  If you want to volunteer, we recommend that you do it on Tuesday on account of the traffic in the shop during the Open Shops.  Regardless, feel free to volunteer during the Open Shop nights, though it's might to be a little busier around the shop on those days.  If you need to work on your own bike come to the Open Shops, which are now 4 days per week (MWThF)

YELLOW BIKE RELEASE - We are going to have an end of summer yellow bike release at Wheatsville on the evening of August 17th, during the third Thursday festivities this month.  We are still preparing Yellow Bikes for the release.  If you are interested in learning the basics of bike repair but are afraid of trashing your own sweet ride this is the opportunity for you.  Yellow bikes are salvaged from bikes that would have no other end than the scrap metal yard.  Through your care you can give back life to a bike which can go on to serve the community for years to come.  Best days to come to work on Yellow Bikes are during the Volunteer Only Shops at 51st street.

WORK PARTY - The next work party is scheduled for August 12th from 2 to 6 pm.  We are going to clean up the tool walls, put finishing touches on the yellow bikes for their release, hang more signs for part bins around the shop, and clean up the bike storage in the shop. For those who always think of Volunteering and never seem to find a reason to, Work Parties are a great opportunity to Volunteer, see substantial improvements made to the shop and meet volunteers involved with Yellow Bike.

Our last work party was successful and allowed us to do some deep cleaning to the shop.  You may notice that things around the shop have been moved around to find a better home.  We also got some new signs on the bins, which are nice if you're trying to find the side pull instead of the V brakes.  We sorted out a lot of parts for a start-up community bike shop in Denton.  We have more parts than we will ever use so we are glad to give them a head start on their parts bins,  Hopefully, they will be able to start a successful shop for the Denton area.  If you think that Yellow Bike is the only community bike shop around check out this sweet MAP of all the shops in the US.

WE NEED A PERMANENT HOME - The Yellow Bike Project is looking for a secure, permanent, warehouse space so that we can continue the great work that we've been doing for the past 9 years. For the last 8 years, our space has been generously donated by the City of Austin; however, it is in an old airport building that is destined for demolition and redevelopment in the ongoing Mueller Airport Redevelopment. We don't know how much longer we will enjoy the wonderful space we currently live in, and are working hard to find a new space before our time runs out. We would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give us to acquire our new space.

A SUCCESSFUL 9th BIRTHDAY FOR YELLOW BIKE - We're not yet used to saying that we are already 9 years old but it is starting to sink in.  A lot has happened and come to be over the years and we were happy to celebrate with all of you.  We had a great time at the party and hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.  Special thanks to all the artists, volunteers, and Gallery Lombardi staff who contributed to making the event a success.  Another special thanks to Black Star Pub http://www.blackstarpub.com/ (world's first cooperatively owned and run brewpub located in Austin) for providing amazing beer for the party and donating half of their pint profits from the event to the Project.

KIDS BIKE DONATIONS
- Believe it or not, school will be starting in a few weeks.  Last year we donated almost 100 bikes to children at 4 local elementary schools.  Children were selected based on their need for a bicycle and were asked to write a brief essay about how a bike would make a difference to them.  The kids bikes to be donated were repaired at the 51st street shop by our volunteers and driven over to the elementary schools for distribution to the kids.  At their school the children are matched to bikes and fitted to them by volunteers.  Once school starts we will begin to do more donations to local elementary schools.  If you have any unused children's bikes laying around or want to participate by repairing bikes for the kids, please consider helping out to make this years program a reality.  We accept bike donations at both the Wheatsville and 51st street shops during the shop hours.  Talk to a coordinator and they can give you a receipt for you donation.

Donations for the '05-'06 School Year
Winn Elementary 12 Bikes
Andrews Elementary 42 Bikes
Blanton Elementary 10 Bikes
Harris Elementary 25 Bikes
Total was 89 Bikes

NEW WEBSITE - You may have noticed that the website http://www.austinyellowbike.org has been redesigned and that the information is a bit more current and maybe a little flashier.  Check the site for the latest shop hours and projects.  Keep an eye on the site as more content is added.  Over the next months we will be adding some of our paper archives, posters, past events, and history so they can be viewed online.  Our goal is to make accessible to the public over the Internet what our organization is, where it came from, where it is going and how it has touched the community here in Austin.  Thanks to Blake Gordon www.blakegordon.com for the wonderful photos that he contributed that are used extensively on the website.

THAT'S ALL - Until next time...
