Newsletter - October 2007

Good morning Yellow Bike friends,

This is a month of several events for us.  Last week we participated in the Green City Festival and today are helping to put on yet another Tour de Fat -- a large fund raiser bike party for Yellow Bike.  Read below for more details on today's event and news.   Hope to see you out today at the Tour.

As always we appreciate the support,
-The Yellow Bike Project

TOUR DE FAT BICYCLE CARNIVAL: Salvation from Dumpnation - Event TODAY!

After a four year detour, New Belgium Brewing's Tour de Fat is cycling into Austin, Texas once again.  The annual event is a ballyhoo of bikes and beer, with environmental sustainability at the very heart of it all.  The tour, traveling on B100 biodiesel fuel, arrives in Austin for its final stop of the 2007 tour on October 20.

Tour de Fat began seven years ago in Ft. Collins, Colorado to increase awareness and participation in cycling as the sustainable transportation alternative.  Tour de Fat has captured the imagination of communities across the West bringing people together  with fanciful entertainment, contests, art displays and, of course, New Belgium Beer.  Last year Tour de Fat traveled to 11 cities, attracted more than 31,000 people and raised more than $166,000.

WHERE: Fiesta Gardens (west entrance), East Austin, TX
WHEN: Saturday, October 20th, 10.30am to 6pm

From Bob Farr at Austin Cycling Association:

Like a bolt of lightning, I had a revelation yesterday while sitting at a table with the New Belgium Brewery boys where we were hammering out final details for Saturday's Tour De Fat. My revelation : THESE GUYS REALLY GET IT. ("It" being bicycle culture and cycling's many issues)

If you want to be part of something BIG and FUN that brings all flavors of cyclists together, and exposes non-cyclists to bike culture in a positive way, then by all means - ride your bike to Tour De Fat.

What is it? (try on this youtube for the big picture)  http://www.youtube.com/v/H-bQL3O_dmY

No, really, what is it? Tour de Fat is a BIKE PARADE (includes you too) followed by an afternoon of ENTERTAINMENT, DEBAUCHERY, & BIKE STUFF -- all FREE. (There will be lots of swag, food and drink available, but that ain't free - proceeds benefit Yellow Bike Project, Austin Ridge Riders and Austin Cycling Association)

"Tour de Fat is a one of a kind, must-see event," said Chris Winn, Tour de Fat's coordinator and event evangelist.  "People and bikes parade around decorated in outrageous costumes, great musicians take to the solar-powered stage, and fascinating performers entertain with creative antics, all while we raise money for local organizations that support the two-wheeled lifestyle."

Tour de Fat is free to participants, but money spent on beer and New Belgium Brewing groovy goods goes towards local charities.  The philanthropic cycling circus helped more than 20 non-profit organizations in 2006.  The Austin stop will raise money for Yellow Bike Project, a non-profit organization that promotes "human-powered transportation", runs a community bike shop and educates the community; Austin Cycling Association, an organization for Central Texas cyclists which organizes bicycle rides almost every weekend and Austin Ridge Riders, a non-profit organization that promotes safe and environmentally conscientious off-road bicycling.

In addition to raising green for local charities and organizations Tour de Fat supports "green" initiatives.  Consistent to New Belgium Brewing's commitment to environmental sustainability, Tour de Fat seeks to leave as small an environmental imprint as possible.

New to TDF this year:

One volunteer in each city will commit to live car-free for one year, as part of the Car-for-Bike Trade Program.  The dedicated individual will sign over their car title and in exchange get a custom-fitted New Belgium commuter bike.  The selected volunteer will chronicle the trials and triumphs along their car-free journey.  The volunteer is chosen after submitting a video or letter describing themselves and their desire to live car-free.

At the Carbon e-Racer Kiosk participants can see how much they will help the environment by making a commitment to join Team Wonderbike.  Team Wonderbike members promise to commute by bike at least once a month for a year.
