Newsletter - Febuary 2009

February 2009 Yellow Bike Newsletter

Dear supporters of Yellow Bike,

imageWe have lots of upcoming events and exciting developments to report on this month.  Read on for the details:

VALENTINES DAY PARTY - Make a date with your bike to ride to the Creekside Lounge (606 East 7th Street) this coming Saturday, February 14 at 9pm and share a romantic evening with YBP.  Quick Release, One Hundred Flowers and The Unbearables will be on hand to serenade you, and all proceeds go to our New Headquarters Fund.

YELLOW SHIRT PROJECT -  One of the more creative fundraising efforts for YBP's New Headquarters Fund (alluded to in last month's newsletter) is the brain-child of YBP Shop Coordinator James, who describes his unique endeavor thusly: "Each month, one of a select group of artists will release a print specially designed just for us.  Each shirt, printed locally at Bearded Lady in limited & numbered editions of 99, will be an authentically crisp way to commemorate your contribution toward the future of Austin's Yellow Bike Project. When everyone in the city rides bikes through the streets with comfort and confidence you can wear one of these twelve tees to show the bandwagon-boarders that you were in on the ground floor."  These collectible, wearable art prints are available for a mere $25 at select local bike shops and through James' website. Check out February's design by Jared Connor, at right, and visit yellowshirtproject.com for ordering info and a sneak peek of future contributing artists.

TRANSPORTATION REPORT -  Dear Readers, This could be your last chance to weigh in on which streets get "Bicycle Priority" inthe new Downtown Austin Plan. The meeting to attend is imagetomorrow -that's right, Feb. 10- at 6pm in the Boards and Commissions Room at City Hall. The Urban Tansportation Commission will send its recommendations to City Council tomorrow night. Make your voice heard. And make your voice informed by reading the "Downtown Austin Plan-Bicycle Circulation" today. At the UTC Bike/Ped Subcommittee Meeting last week, the Commissioners recommended some changes. Will the full Commission agree with them? It could be up to you... See all the relevant documents with your own eyes here .

BRIDGE TO MEXICO BIKING EXTRAVAGANZA - Nikki, from the Amigos Project, sent us the following invite: If you are looking for a fun and new way to experience Austin, on February 28th is the first Fun Raising for Fund Racing. Meet at Butler Park at 2 p.m. with a bike for the Bridge to Mexico Biking Extravaganza, an all ages event. For $10 you can participate in one of four categories, depending on your skill level and competitiveness. The goal is to collect a token from as many checkpoints in a certain amount of time. The locations of checkpoints will be determined by which skill level category you belong in, and a map will be revealed as this extravaganza begins. There is a category for everyone, from kids to intense bikers, and all proceeds go towards a a good cause. All profits of this fund racing for fun raising go towards Amigos Project, comprised of volunteers that go to Mexico and provides schools and community centers in poor areas. For more info, you can contact nulugikki@gmail.com or call (512) 775-2061.

TREASURE CITY SHOP NEWS - Shops are still going strong at Treasure City, five days a week.  The weather has been cooperating and our new outdoor workspace on the building's east lot has been getting rave reviews from coordinators and shop-users alike. Stop by to work on your bike, peruse our selection of ready-to-ride bikes or volunteer and gain new skills while rehabbing donated bikes.  We're still open late Friday nights along with Treasure City Thrift.  We are moving some ready-to-ride bikes into Treasure City Thrift for major sale action. We are hoping an elegant show space at TC (thanks Nathan) will get more bikes to the people who need them. For more info on Treasure City events, see http://www.treasurecitythrift.org/.

YELLOW BIKE AT THE DOWNTOWN FARMER'S MARKET -   Les and Alonso are manning our booth at the Downtown Farmer's Market every Saturday from 9am - 1pm.  Stop by to wrench on your bike, buy a t-shirt or just say hi.
