Newsletter - April 2009 Dear supporters of Yellow Bike, Spring has officially sprung, and this month's newsletter is packed full of upcoming events and exciting bike-centric information. Read on for the details: SHOP CONSTRUCTION NEWS - Yellow Bike Headquarters Update - We are coming closer and closer to actually breaking ground at the new headquarters site. The site plan and architectural drawings are currently complete and under city review, and we are actively seeking bids for construction of the new building (let us know if you have any good leads for contractors)! With lots of luck, we hope to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in mid-May, so stay tuned for updates. Please visit our Webberville headquarters page for more information, or to donate to the fund.
The 21st Street Coop Bike Project is building their new home in West Campus. Their open shop hours are currently on hold while construction is underway, but they will pick back up in July with a grand opening party (date to be announced). Anyone interested in building, or helping out in any way is encouraged to contact Will Wolfe at coopbikeshop@yahoo.com. If you'd like more information, or would like to donate to their building fund, you can do so here . FUNDRAISING UPDATE - Benefit Parties - In the past month there's been a spate of successful events benefiting YBP's New Headquarters Fund and we'd like to thank everyone involved: organizers and venues like Bold & Zesty Productions' Colin and Zoe, the Mohawk, Ben Lynch's Alley Cat, the Compound, Clown Dog Bikes, the Scoot Inn, all the bands and everyone who attended. Thanks for contributing to the future of your community bike shop. Yellow Shirt Project - Limited edition art prints will again be available from yellowshirtproject.com for April. Due to SXSW and Flatstock, no design was produced for march. The shirts are $25 and proceeds go to the New Headquarters Fund. Our stock of Jared Conner's first design is dwindling, but Paul Fucik, of The Decoder Ring Design Concern, has a shirt that is rolling off the press this week (see pic). Michael Seiben is on deck for May. Don't miss out. See the yellow shirt website for details.
TBC Mailing List - There are multiple bike-related bills coming down the pipe this legislative season and the Texas Bicycle Coalition (TBC) is the go-to organization for staying up to date on what's going on, which lawmakers' ears we need to bend and when to show up in person to make our voices heard. If you'd like to stay informed about all of TBC's statewide cycling advocacy efforts, you can sign up for their email newsletter here. Damned Cyclist - YBP apprentice coordinator Angel Serda has completed production on the first issue of his comic, Damned Cyclist. It is the fantastical, if somewhat non-linear, tale of an intrepid young man trapped on a bike that just won't stop. The $2 cover price goes directly to benefit YBP and it is available at the Treasure City shop as well as other bike, book and comic shops around town. Earth Day at Whole Foods - Yellow Bike will be hosting a table at the downtown Whole Foods (6th and Lamar) on April 22 from 11am - 3 pm. You can celebrate Earth Day in style by taking part in our recycled bucket pannier building workshop. Supplies are limited, so bike down early.
Bike Month is Coming - May is Bike Month and volunteer staff has placed a call for submissions to the first ever "Bike Month Guide." The publication will be an Austin Chronicle-sized, full color product whose purpose is to promote all things BIKE in the month of May. Submissions can be in the form of photos, stories, poems, events during the month, cycling tips, or anything else you can imagine printed on flat paper. Submission deadline is April 15th so don't delay. Send all submissions or questions to bikemonth@austincycling.org. Ad space is also available. YBP Bike Drive - On Sunday, May 3, we're kicking off Bike Month 2009 with a bike drive at REI downtown, at 6th and Lamar. If you have an unused, dusty bike or two, bring them down. We'll have them overhauled and back on the road in no time. Or just stop by and pick up a copy of the free, ACA sponsored Bike Month Guide, on which YB volunteers Russell Pickavance and Angel Serda are tirelessly working as we speak. YBP Ladies' Clinics - Open to all members of the feminine persuasion, YBP will be holding a series of women's clinics on the following dates: 5/2 - Meet your bike. I.D. parts and components. Learn to patch a flat. Learn how to fit a bike. 5/9 - Making adjustments with few or no tools--brakes and derailleurs. 5/23 - Brakes and shifting in-depth. Cable routing and set-up. 5/30 - Cups and bearings. Headsets, bottom bracket's, hubs. Wheel truing for anyone who wants to know. A-Scouts Bike Maintenance Merit Badge Workshop - YBP coordinator Pete Dahlberg will be hosting a bike-related merit badge workshop for the A-scout kids, followed by a fun safety ride, on May 9th from 9:00am - 1:00pm. Anyone who'd like to help out, or just come along for the ride, can contact Pete here . Community Arts and Bike Carnival - Don't miss the fun at the 3rd annual Bike Rodeo and Carnival at Zaragoza Rec Center from 2pm - 5pm on May 16. Austin Cycling Association will again be providing free helmets for the kiddies, YBP will be providing free kids' bikes for the neighborhood, and the Theatre Action Project and the Austin Bike Zoo will provide bike puppets and entertainment for all. More Fun With Austin Bike Zoo - Coming to Austin this May! Wheels of Wonderland, A theatrical spectacle celebrating human-powered magic of all shapes and sizes based on works by Lewis Carroll and featuring the Austin Bike Zoo, the Texas Juggling Society, members of the 999 Eyes, the Minor Mishap Marching band, a variety of other performers and many creative cycling characters, directed by Rudy Ramirez. These events are created to celebrate human power and Austin parks. Shows are free and open to the public. For more information contact Sachi.
12th Birthday Party - Can you believe that time of year is already upon us? Time just goes so fast as you get older: we'll be throwing our 12th birthday bash at Red 7 (611 E. 7th St.) on Thursday, May 21st with Austin's own Shearwater headlining. The Theater Fire (DFW), The Yellow Bike Gospel Choir, and Buttercup (SA) will be filling out the bill, so mark your calendars now and make sure to ask off work Friday so you can stay late and enjoy the fun. Urban Assault Ride - New Belgium beer is putting together a city-wide bicycle scavenger hunt/race for June 28. To make it all work, they're asking for volunteers from local bike-related organizations (like us). Volunteers will get a free T-shirt, free food, and free beer. New Belgium will also make a donation to each participating organization, based on how many volunteers it supplies. To recap: free food, clothing, and shelter...er, beer, and a fat donation to YBP's new building fund, all for a half-day's fun. If you'd like to volunteer on YBP's behalf, contact coordinator Russell Pickavance. OTHER NEWS AND INFORMATION -
APD Bike Training - Our hats are off to Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. After a recent, Austin Cycling Association (ACA) sponsored sit-down between himself and Austin cyclists, the Chief has called for a new training initiative for all APD officers regarding bikes as legitimate, legal traffic.
SHOP NEWS - Meanwhile, YBP is still representing at the Downtown Farmer's Market every Saturday from 9am - 1pm. Les and his rotating cast of co-coordinators will be presenting a different hands-on workshop every Saturday at 11am, with topics ranging from flat fixing to pannier building (those handy buckets hanging from either side of a rear rack). Workshops for this month are as follows:
