HELP MAKE Yellow Bike's NEW Headquarters Become A reality!
TIMELINE (the short version...)
2008 June-December: Begin construction on NEW Headquarters! While homeless, find us at extended treasure city hours, farmers markets, and expanded schools programs. June 30th: 51st Street shop decommissioned. June 21st 10am: Human Powered Move from 51st to Webberville site. Tools and parts put in on-site storage during construction.. June 14th: Host Frankenbike #34 at 51st Street from Noon-4pm. Huge bike sale! May 31st: Yellow Bike Birthday Party and Fundraiser. No more Open Shops at 51st Street. All volunteer efforts focused on decommissioning 51st Street. Focus on putting as many bikes on the road as possible. March: City Council directs City Government to sign a 50 year lease for Webberville site. January-June: Site plan work with the City to develop the site begins. 2007 December: Located the Webberville Site. Things are looking up! January-December: Searching for site with City. 2006 October: Presentation to UTC asking for continued city support. UTC recommends that City Council support YBP. 2005 Early 2005: Initial assessment of options. Worked to maintain support from City and looked at private property as contingency. The Dream - We are looking forward to creating a hub for the Austin bicycling community. The site will host our regular free workshops as well as expanded daytime operations, summer camps, flexible meeting space open to the cycling community, and community gardens. About the site - The site is located at the intersections of 12th Street, Webberville Road and Springdale Road next to Simms Elementary. All three roads have major bike lanes, which we took to be a sign. The front 1/3rd of the lot facing Webberville has a small forest where we plan to setup a picnic table and outdoor meeting space. The rest of the grounds not occupied by the building will be developed into community gardens and landscaped to do justice to a 50 year home. We are working to get a site plan approved by the city to develop the site. We hope to have this process complete within the next month. About the building - We will construct a 3000 sq ft. warehouse much like our current facility. We will abut our building to an existing 1000 sq ft. slab that will serve as additional storage. With the generous support of several volunteer architects we have designed the space to be as comfortable as possible using passive heating/cooling and day-lighting techniques. The southern wall of the workshop area will open up in the warm months giving plenty of air flow and allowing us to work outside. We need your help - To make the shop a reality we are calling on friends of Yellow Bike to provide volunteers, materials, and funds. Read below to see how you can help.
